What is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value calculated from a person's weight and height. It is a widely used screening tool to identify potential weight-related health issues. BMI was developed by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet in the 1830s and has since become one of the most commonly used health indicators worldwide.

While BMI is a useful population-level screening tool, it is not a diagnostic measure. It does not directly measure body fat, muscle mass, or fat distribution. However, research has shown that BMI correlates with direct measures of body fat, such as underwater weighing and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA).

Adults with a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 are considered to have a normal or healthy weight. A BMI below 18.5 indicates underweight, 25.0 to 29.9 indicates overweight, and a BMI of 30 or above indicates obesity. For children and teens, BMI is interpreted using age and sex-specific percentiles.

If your BMI falls outside the normal range, it is recommended to consult a healthcare professional for a more comprehensive health assessment. Lifestyle changes including balanced nutrition and regular physical activity can help achieve and maintain a healthy BMI.
