How to Calculate Your Required Final Exam Score
The formula is: Final Score Needed = (Desired Grade − (Current Grade × Current Weight / 100)) ÷ (Final Exam Weight / 100). For example, if your current grade is 72%, your current work covers 70% of the total grade, and you want an 80% final grade: Final Score = (80 − 72 × 0.7) / 0.3 = (80 − 50.4) / 0.3 = 29.6 / 0.3 = 98.7%.
This means you need a 98.7% on the final exam to achieve 80% overall. If this is not realistic, you need to adjust your target grade downward. Most students are surprised by how much a high-weighted final can swing their overall grade — or how little a low-score can help if the final is worth only 20%.
🔬 Methodology & Accuracy
Formula: Uses the standard mathematical formula shown in the Formula & Method section above. All computations run client-side in your browser — no data is sent to our servers.
Data sources: Tax bands, contribution limits and regulatory rates are taken from official US (IRS, SSA) and UK (HMRC, gov.uk) publications for the current tax year, and updated when bands change.
