US Take-Home Pay — How It Works

Your gross salary is reduced by four main deductions: federal income tax (using 2026 IRS brackets and standard deduction), state income tax (shown as a simplified estimate), Social Security at 6.2% up to the $184,500 wage base, and Medicare at 1.45%.

High earners also pay an Additional Medicare Tax of 0.9% on wages above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married). Pre-tax contributions to 401(k), HSA, and FSA reduce your taxable income and therefore your federal and state tax bills.
