Types of Scholarships and How They Are Calculated
Merit-based scholarships are awarded based on academic performance. Most institutions offer tiered slabs — for example, 100% fee waiver for 90%+ scores, 75% for 80–89%, 50% for 70–79%, and 25% for 60–69%. Some competitive scholarships like the National Merit Scholarship and PM Scholarship require state-level or national-level toppers.
Need-based scholarships consider annual family income. The NSP (National Scholarship Portal) scholarships typically cover students with family income below ₹8 lakh per annum. The Central Sector Scheme covers tuition fees up to ₹10,000/year for students scoring in the top 20 percentile of their board.
Combined scholarships factor in both merit and financial need. The scholarship amount is often calculated as the average of the merit percentage and the need percentage applied to the total fees.
🔬 Methodology & Accuracy
Formula: Uses the standard mathematical formula shown in the Formula & Method section above. All computations run client-side in your browser — no data is sent to our servers.
Data sources: Tax bands, contribution limits and regulatory rates are taken from official US (IRS, SSA) and UK (HMRC, gov.uk) publications for the current tax year, and updated when bands change.
