Sleep Calculator

Each sleep cycle lasts approximately 90 minutes. Waking at the end of a cycle (rather than mid-cycle) dramatically reduces grogginess. Enter your wake-up time or bedtime to get the optimal sleep schedule.

📐 Formula & Method

Sleep Cycle Timing

Bedtime = Wake-up − (N × 90 min) − Fall-asleep time | Recommended cycles: 5 or 6 (7.5 or 9 hours)

A full night includes 5–6 sleep cycles. Each cycle includes light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep. Interrupting deep sleep causes the groggy "sleep inertia" feeling.

📋 How to Use

  1. 1

Select whether to enter wake-up time or bedtime.

  2. 2

Enter the target hour and minute.

  3. 3

Optionally adjust how long it takes you to fall asleep.

  4. 4

See optimal bedtimes or wake-up times for 4, 5, and 6 cycles.

Why Sleep Cycles Matter

Sleep is not uniform — it cycles through 4 stages approximately every 90 minutes: light sleep (N1, N2), deep sleep (N3/slow-wave), and REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. Deep sleep is critical for physical restoration; REM sleep is vital for memory consolidation and mood.

Waking during deep sleep causes sleep inertia — that groggy, disoriented feeling that can last 30–60 minutes. By timing your alarm to the end of a 90-minute cycle, you wake naturally during lighter sleep feeling more alert. Most adults need 7–9 hours (5–6 cycles) per night.

🔬 Methodology & Accuracy

Formula: Uses the standard mathematical formula shown in the Formula & Method section above. All computations run client-side in your browser — no data is sent to our servers.

Data sources: Tax bands, contribution limits and regulatory rates are taken from official US (IRS, SSA) and UK (HMRC, gov.uk) publications for the current tax year, and updated when bands change.
