HECS-HELP — Understanding Indexation
HECS-HELP debt does not accrue ordinary interest, but it is indexed each 1 June. Indexation rules changed after the high 2023 and 2024 indexation years, so borrowers should check ATO/myGov for the exact indexed balance before making a voluntary repayment.
Repayments are compulsory once repayment income exceeds the annual threshold and are collected through your tax return. From 2025-26, the first compulsory band starts above $67,000 and uses marginal repayment calculations.
🔬 Methodology & Accuracy
Formula: Applies the 2025-26 ATO study and training loan marginal repayment formula to annual repayment income, then projects balance after annual indexation and repayments.
