UK Student Loans — Will You Ever Pay It Off?

Unlike US student loans, UK loans are written off after a set period regardless of balance: Plan 1 at age 65, Plan 2 after 30 years, Plan 4 after 30 years, Plan 5 after 40 years. Most Plan 2 borrowers with typical graduate salaries are projected to never repay in full.

Plan 5 (for those starting from August 2023) has a lower repayment threshold (£25,000) and a longer 40-year write-off term, meaning more graduates will repay a larger portion of their loan.

🔬 Methodology & Accuracy

Formula: Monthly repayment is 9% of earnings above the applicable annual repayment threshold, divided by 12. The projection applies salary growth, annual interest, and each plan write-off period.
